Park & Ride for Southampton
We all know what it is like in Bassett, having to plan when you nip to the shops, avoiding any travel during rush hour, waiting for delayed buses that are also struggling to move under the weight of traffic.
Southampton has some of the worst traffic congestion in the country. Unfortunately no action has been taken on this problem for decades. Planning has allowed construction of large car parks in the city centre and the natural geography of the city with bridges, coasts, and rivers makes our problems all the worse.
We would love to back calls for a return to Trams in Southampton but we need to cover the basics first.
We want action on reducing car usage in the city and we believe strongly that a Park and Ride system will help enormously to reduce traffic from visitors to the city whether that be for work or travel (cruises etc). Signage telling us to car share simply won't cut it. Schemes in Liberal Democrat run Winchester and Portsmouth have been highly successful and we would like the same here.
Southampton's roads are becoming ever-more congested, which is having a negative impact on air quality, and therefore the health of residents.
The Labour-run Southampton City Council should be doing more to address the concerns of citizens with regard to traffic and pollution levels.
We call upon Southampton City Council to provide convenient Park & Ride facilities for visitors to the city.
