Invest in Bassett
For decades the Sports Centre in Bassett has been underfunded, neglected and left to deteriorate. The facilities constructed in the 1920s were built with an ambition to be the centre of sporting activities in Southampton. Over the years the likes of Roger Black, Kriss Akabusi, Todd Bennett and, most recently, Iwan Thomas have all trained at the facility which has been described as 'the worst in the UK'.
Bassett Liberal Democrats are campaigning for an improvement in these facilities to match our ambition for this city. Sport and recreation is important in improving and maintaining population health and well-being. Specifically we are campaigning for:
Investment in an athletics changing room and HQ facility.
A transport plan to tackle parking at the centre and surrounding streets.
Better public transport links particularly at weekends.
Restoration of the boating lake or a plan for change of use.
Continued investment and protection of this important green space.
Lack of management of the space has also seen two potential family homes fall into disrepair and we believe that the residents of Bassett deserve better. We are demanding immediate action on these houses especially with homelessness still prevalent in the city.
It is time for proper investment to be made into this open space and our public health. We are campaigning to tidy up the Sports Centre and to create a facility of sporting excellence that Southampton can be proud of.
